A Visual Irrigation Guide for Maize (Zea mays L.)
1971
Downey, Lloyd A.
A guide for timing irrigation of maize to minimise water stress was developed. The guide utilized visual estimates of leaf relative water content (RWC) — taking a value of 90% as a critical lower limit. Known relationships between soil matric potential and vapour pressure deficit were used to define the critical RWC in a variable environment. In a semi-arid situation a simple measurement of temperature could replace the more complicated measurement of vapour pressure deficit. Hence need for irrigation could be ascertained from a graph, using a visual estimate of RWC and a measurement of air temperature. Elsewhere, vapour pressure deficit would have to be used instead of air temperature.
