Genetic analysis in maize

The study was conducted to assess the nature and magnitude of gene action with respect to grain yield and its attributing traits in maize at two locations viz., Bangalore and Mandya districts of Karnataka, India. Epistasis for Days to 50% anthesis and days to 50% silking was evident at Bangalore, whereas the epistasis was absent for the same traits at Mandya. Epistasis was significant for 100-grain weight at Mandya, whereas for the same trait epistasis was non-significant at Bangalore. Dominance genetic variation (H) was higher in magnitude for all the 13 characters except days to 50% silking, cob diameter, kernel rows cob⁻¹, 100-grain weight and protein content at Bangalore, which indicated that the protein content can be inherited through selection. Whereas, the predominance of additive genetic variance was observed at Mandya expect for days to 50% tasseling, days to 50% anthesis, plant height, ear height and cob length. Preponderance of additive genetic variance in this location, implicated high heritability and effectiveness of selection of the concerned traits.
