Abdominal adipose tissue and serum HDL-cholesterol: association independent from obesity and serum triglyceride concentration

A study assessed interrelationships between serum triglycerides (TG) and high-density-lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol levels and their respective association with subcutaneous fat (SF) distribution and abdominal fat (AF) in a sample of 429 healthy male adult volunteers. The results indicated that the distribution of SF and the amount of subcutaneous AF are significantly associated with serum lipids and HDL-cholesterol, and that the association between AF and serum HDL-cholesterol is independent from total adiposity. However, statistical control over serum TG failed to eliminate the association between AF and serum HDL-cholesterol, suggesting that an additional mechanism regulating the relationship between subcutaneous AF and the proportion of serum cholesterol transported by HDL may exist.(wz)
