Knowledge and use of United States Dietary Goals by university students

Extract: One hundred male and female students (18-22 years) were given a questionnaire concerning their awareness of the United States Dietary Goals (USDG) and to ascertain whether these subjects were making an effort to change their diets towards meeting the USDG. Only 19% of the students had ever read or heard about the USDG. Many students, however were making efforts to modify their diets along USDG quidelines. Seventy-four percent of the students were making some effort to control body weight. Seventy-three percent were trying to decrease sugar consumption, but only 24% were trying to increase their consumption of complex carbohydrates; 31% of the students actually were trying to decrease complex carbohydrate consumption. Fifty-two percent of the subjects were trying to lower fat content of their diet, 48% were making efforts to substitute vegetable oil for animal fat and 32% were trying to decrease cholesterol consumption. Forty-nine percent were attempting to reduce dietary salt. USDG guidelines most frequently adhered to by females were those related directly or indirectly to reducing body weight while males were more interested in prevention of cardiovascular disease.
