Development of snapdragon hybrids and their evaluation for vegetative, flowering and seed attributes

In a breeding programme, 45 hybrids have been developed including 10 inbreds of snapdragon. These in breds and hybrids were evolution during two years on the basis of growth, flowering and seed attributes. The experiment was conducted at Model Floriculture centre of University in a randomized block design. Out of 55, 22 genotypes showed bushy, 15 had erect and 18 showed spreading growth habit. Maximum number of leaves/plant was recorded with AG-1 × Sant-22 during both years. Maximum number of secondary branches/plant was recorded with AG-3 × Sant-22 during both years. Whereas, maximum leaf area index was observed with AG-5 and AG-1 × Sant-22 during first and second year, respectively. Maximum dry weight of leaf was recorded with AG-5 × Sant-22 during both years. AG-4 exhibited maximum chlorophyll content. Plant spread ranged from 30.61 cm (Vilmorin) to 87.85 cm (AG-1 × Sant-22) during first year and from 24.17 cm (Vilmorin × AG-4) to 98.17 cm (AG-3 × Sant-22) during II year. On the basis of mean performance of plant height, 12 genotypes were grouped in dwarf category (30–60 cm), 20 genotypes had medium height (61–90 cm) while 6 genotypes were kept under tall category. Earliest flowering was exhibited by SA-1 × Sant-22 which was at par with AG-3 × SA-1. Maximum rachis length was recorded in SA-1 × AG-5 and AG-4 (during first and second year. Duration of flowering varied from 56.33 days (Vilmorin × Sant-22) to 93.33 days (AG-3 × SA-1). The number of spikes/m² was found maximum with AG-3 × AG-5 in both years. Earliest seed maturity was observed in Sant-11 × Sant-22 during I year and in Vilmorin × AG-4 during second year. Vilmorin × AG-4 showed maximum number of seeds/pod. The heaviest seeds (1000 seed weight) were found in AG-1 × AG-3.
