Chen, A.C. | Wagner, R.M.
1. Organic constituents of the hemolymph of the adult stable fly, Stomoxys calcitrans (L.) were analysed before and after the first blood meal. 2. Hemolymph trehalose concentration decreases after a blood meal and remains low throughout digestion. 3. Hemolymph glucose concentration decreases immediately following a blood meal but rises to a level higher than that before feeding and that in the ingested blood during digestion. 4. Trehalase activity is present in the stable fly hemolymph at 58.4 pmol/min/microliter at 30 degrees C. 5. Free amino acid content in the stable fly hemolymph is high. 6. Proline is the major free amino acid in the hemolymph, accounting for as much as 72% of the total amino acids.
