The relationship of mode of infant feeding and location of care to frequency of infection

An experiment was performed to see if infant feeding method or location of care could be correlated with frequency of infection. Over the course of 1 year, 200 healthy, full-term infants were studied by feeding method (breast, breast and formula, or formula), by location of care, and by number of siblings at home. Average infection rate was found to be 35 per cent greater for infants in a day-care or sitter location than those fed in the home. Method of feeding had no effect on frequency of infection. This experiment offers evidence against the theory that breast feeding reduces the frequency of infant infection.(mp)
