A virus infection of the pancreas producing inflammation of the islets and injury to the beta cells was reported. The virus was recovered and produced similar injury and subsequent hypoglycemia in mice. In insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus, inflammation of the islets destroys insulin-producing beta cells. Although immunosuppressive agents may be useful in treatment of virus-induced diabetes mellitus, complete destruction of the beta cells is a very gradual process and is as much due to impaired ability of the human beta cell to replicate, as to the disease itself.
