A report describes the findings and recommendations of a working party that was set up as a joint initiative between the 5 health authorities and the education authority of Birmingham, England to develop advice on the nutritional value of school meals and the role of such meals in the health education of school children. Specific attention is given to: the nutrient requirements and intakes of healthy school children during school meals; the nutrient content of school dinners; and special nutritional requirements (e.g.: weight control; ethnic children; handicapped children). Practical dietary guidelines are included, and financial aspects of the school meal program are discussed.(wz)
