Effects of low levels of iron on hemoglobin values of parasitised school children

Abstrqct: A combination of low levels of iron administered over a 12-week period as ferrous sulphate or ferrous gluconate, plus antihelmintic treatment was effective in raising hemoglobin levels of 196 Egyptian primary schoolchildren, 30% of whom were anemic as indicated by initial hemoglobin values below 10 g/dl. Mean hemoglobin content of the children was 10.7 g/dl; 68.5% were infested with parasites and 41% eliminated Ascaris worms in the feces. Iron or antihelmintic treatment alone also resulted in slightly higher hemoglobin concentrations. Since parasitic infection and malnutrition appear to interact in the development of iron-deficiency anemia in Egyptian children, iron supplements combined with antihelmintic therapy could reduce its prevalence.
