Influence of different levels of potassium fertilizers on growth, yield and ascorbic acid content of tomato fruit grown in non-heated greenhouse

The effect of different potassium fertilizer levels on plant growth, yield and fruit ascorbic acid content was tested, in tomato crop (cv. Vivia F1), in two successive years (1998 and 1999). Three different nutrition regimes were applied, each year. Nitrogen (8 mmol l-1) and phosphorus were kept in a constant range, in all plots, while potassium ranged at the following N:P2O5:K2O ratios: 1.0:0.4:1.2, 1.0:0.4:2.4, 1.0:0.4:4.8. No statistical differences were found in the mean of the logarithm (ln) of plant height, the mean of ln plant leaf number, the slope of the growth curve of the ln plant height or the slope of the growth curve of ln plant leaf number. There were no significant differences in crop yield, either. However, there were significant differences in the ascorbic acid content of the ripe fruits in relation to the potassium level applied. There was also a significant role of the year and the fruit position in the crop (light intensity related to the truss position) on the ascorbic acid content of the fruits.
