The objective of this research was to evaluate the local knowledge related to forest recreation in the National Parks "El Chico", State of Hidalgo and "Desierto de los Leones", Federal District, in terms of visitor goals and recreational services. The Recreational Opportunity Spectrum (ROS) developed by the US Forest Service is the most used international framework. However, it is necessary to evaluate its local application. A visitor survey and provider interviews were conducted in both parks, and exploratory and multivariate analysis data were performed in order to identify the relationship between site and physical characteristics. The results contrast with the ROS framework planning because there is neither a distinction among visitor goals nor a recreation use gradient. Visitors perceive a high degree of wilderness, even in sites with a large number of recreational facilities. Based on site and service characteristics, a three-group framework is proposed with dimensions related to recreational space, water bodies, degree of affluence and types of activity. One group was prominent for the large number of physical activities and camping, another for the absence of water and the greater heterogeneity in uses, while the third group was characterized by presence of water bodies and scarce affluence of visitors.
