The Supervisor's role in a union election
1983
Tidwell, Gary L.
Employees' preference for union affiliation can be influenced by their supervisors' actions. The key to avoiding unionization is to be attuned to employee satisfaction. Unfair labor practices and inadvertent union recognition can trap unwary supervisors (especially comments made to individual employees or statements made to groups). There is a delicate balancing process for both sides (labor and management). Supervisors should be educated to their role in a National Labor Relations Board election process; they must think before responding, and avoid inadevertent recognition, misrepresentation, or questioning employees about union membership and activities. Managers should not make jokes and should state only the facts. (kbc)
