Empirical representation of ammonium adsorption in two soils

Two models for ammonium adsorption, employing the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms and not representing other cations, were fitted to adsorption data on two different soils. The Langmuir model gave a slightly better fit to the data and had the added advantage that one of the parameters appeared to be related to cation exchange capacity. Both the Freundlich and the Langmuir models accounted for most of the variation in observed NH4 levels, but small statistically significant departures from the data remained, possibly related to cation interactions, the effects of variable pH, or to precipitation reactions not considered in the models. For low ammonium levels, both the Langmuir and the Freundlich models predicted that ammonium concentration in the soil solution varies with the level of ammonium in the soil, but not with soil water content.
