Early performance of pear cultivars on various old home x Farmingdale (OHxF) interstem-rootstock combinations

Plots were established at Hood River and Medford, Oregon in 1996 to evaluate the performance of pear varieties on several Old Home x Farmingdale (OHxF) clonal rootstock and interstem combinations. OHxF selections 40, 51, 69, and 87 were used as interstems, and OHxF selections 97, 513, 333, and 217 were used as rootstocks. The rootstock selections are semi-vigorous to vigorous and easy to propagate by hardwood cuttings. The clones used as interstems are considered semi-dwarfing and relatively difficult to propagate by hardwood cuttings. All combinations of interstem and rootstock, plus rootstocks without interstems, were tested. The fruiting cultivars were 'Bartlett' and 'Bosc' at Medford, and 'Bartlett', 'Bosc', 'd'Anjou', and 'Columbia Red Anjou' at Hood River. Bearing began in 1998, and production data for the years 1998-2001 were evaluated. There was no significant effect of interstem on the number of fruit per tree, tree yield, fruit weight, trunk cross-sectional area or yield efficiency during this period. However, rootstock effects were significant in most cases, and varied between locations and among cultivars.
