Impact of Teretriosoma nigrescens Lewis (Coleoptera: Histeridae) on Prostephanus truncatus (Horn) (Coleoptera: Bostrichidae) and losses in traditional maize stores in southern Togo

Traditional maize stores in Lome-Cacaveli in southern Togo were investigated from 1988 to 1992 in order to compare losses and damage to stored maize cobs and infestation by insect pests before and after release of Teretriosoma nigrescens Lewis. Ten stores in three trials were investigated before the release and nine stores in three trials thereafter. It was found that the infestation of Prostephanus truncatus (Horn) in the stores decreased after release of T. nigrescens in 1991. Before, the population of P. truncatus was 4300 adults on average per 100 cobs after 8 months of storage. In the years following release, there were only 296 adults per 100 cobs when T. nigrescens was present in stores, a reduction of 93.1%. Damage to grains was 21.2% in the presence of T. nigrescens, compared to 62.6% without the predator, and losses were reduced by an average of 81.2%.
