In vitro sensitivity to graded concentrations of aflatoxin B1 was compared in tracheal organ cultures prepared from day-old chickens, ducks, Japanese quail, and turkeys. The minimum concentrations of toxin in the tracheal organ cultures that were required to produce visible cytopathology in the explants were approximately 100 parts per billion (ppb) for chicken, 47 ppb for Japanese quail, 28 ppb for turkey, and 6 ppb for duck. Quantitation of aflatoxin B1 in duck explants approached the sensitivity achievable by available physicochemical methods. In vitro susceptibility of tracheal organ cultures to the aflatoxin parallels in vivo susceptibility. This suggests that the susceptibility of a species to aflatoxin is a cellular phenomenon inherent to the species, not dependent on extracellular events.
