Resistance to imidazolinone herbicides is being introduced into commercial corn varieties. The program to create these hybrids has proceeded through the initiation, implementation and mutant characterization phases, and is currently in the final commercial development phase. Resistant corn was produced by in vitro selection and regeneration of resistant plants. Genetic analyses established that resistance is conferred by a single, semidominant mutant allele. Biochemical analyses demonstrated that resistance is due to altered forms of the enzyme acetohydroxyacid synthase. Commercial sales of imidazolinone-resistant hybrid corn are expected to begin in 1992. This paper tracks the imidazolinone-resistant corn project from its inception through development of the commercial product.
