This chapter provides a concise account of the specimen banking concept in relation to analytical chemistry and precautions to be observed during chemical analysis of such stored specimens. An attempt will also be made to present practical guidelines for setting up a human tissue bank, and to consolidate the experience gained in this field in a few countries presently operating such tissue banks. Where relevant, some aspects of non-human environmental specimen collection will be included.
