Vitamin A-binding proteins
1985
Ong, D.E.
A literature review describes the characteristics and discusses the biological significance of vitamin A-binding proteins (e.g., retinol-binding protein). Specific attention is focused on: vitamin A absorption; vitamin A transport to target organs and distribution within the cells of the organ tissue; and vitamin A-binding proteins in the retina and in the testis. The review shows that vitamin A absorption and subsequent tissue distribution is mediated by a number of specific carrier proteins. The characteristics of 6 such proteins that have been discovered are discussed.(wz)
