Total caffein consumption by hospital patients should be appraised in view of its pharmacologic effects. Investigations on the physiologic and psychotropic effects of caffein in human beings are reviewed. The discussion focuses on: metabolism; the central nervous system; caffeinism; effects on older people, on mentally ill patients and on children with minimal brain damage; effect on sleep; gastrointestinal responses, compounds in coffee; caffein drug interactions; the cardiovascular system; solvents; toxicity; and, implications for the dietitian.
