Assessment of methods for assigning treadmill exercise workloads for lean and obese women

A comparison was made between relative and absolute methods of assigning workloads to obese and lean women during treadmill exercise. The study involved 10 lean women and 7 massively obese women; the relative method was relative (per cent) oxygen consumption (ROC), while the absolute method was absolute maximal oxygen consumption (AOC). AOC and heart rate were higher for obese women than lean women, while AOC in obese women relative to total body weight and fat-free body weight was higher than and similar to, respectively, lean women. The relationship between ROC and heart rate was similar in both groups of women. It is concluded that ROC can more accurately define physiologically comparable exercise intensities for these groups, and should be the method of choice for assessing metabolic, endocrine, or cardiovascular differences between lean and obese women.(wz)
