A comparison of two methods of milk sampling for calculating the fat intake of breast-fed babies

A randomized cross-over study compared the use of a latex nipple shield during breast-feeding with breast milk expression for sampling breast milk for analysis of fat content to assess the dietary fat intakes of breast-feeding infants. Expressed milk samples resulted in higher fat intakes than shield-obtained samples, due both to a higher fat content in the expressed milk samples and to a higher milk intake by infants when breast-feeding is not interrupted by shield sampling.(wz)
