Breeding for A1 tolerance is considered a useful way to improve crop performance on acid soils. However, a successful selection of A1-tolerant genotypes, which will render high yields on acid soils, requires the development of screening methods based on the knowledge of A1-toxicity and A1-tolerance mechanisms. In this paper the present stage of knowledge on A1 phytotoxicity and tolerance is comprehensively reviewed. Special emphasis will be made on primary mechanisms of A1 toxicity, the interactions of A1 with membranes, and the role of Ca in the A1-toxicity syndrome.
