Impaired glucose tolerance and diabetes mellitus in elderly subjects

The prevalence and 10-year incidence of impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) and diabetes mellitus (DM), and the influence of glucose tolerance on mortality were examined in a cohort of elderly subjects tested at age 70 (406 subjects) and again at age 80 (169 subjects). Both groups received an oral glucose tolerance test. Incidences of DM and IGT were 10% and 26% at age 70, respectively, and were 12% and 35% at age 80, respectively. Excessive 10-year mortality was noted for both sexes having DM at age 70, and for men having IGT at that age. This excessive mortality was attributed solely, or in part, to cardiovascular disease. The data also indicated that the DM incidence at age 80 was 20% if IGT was present at age 70, but was only 4% when IGT was not present at that age. (wz)
