Stockley, Lynn | Jones, Frances A. | Broadhurst, Anita J.
A 1-week crossover study evaluating the relative effects of each of a moderate protein-free energy supplement (420 kcal/day), a protein supplement (14 g protein representing 84 kcal/day), and a placebo on protein and energy intakes revealed that, relative to the placebo, the energy supplement increased the average energy intake 273 kcal/day and the protein supplement initially increased the average protein intake by 20.5 g (which decreased to 5.9 g by the seventh day). The study results indicated that the protein supplement significantly decreased energy (carbohydrate) intakes and that the energy supplement significantly increased protein intakes. The implications of these findings are discussed. (wz)
