Intestinal adenocarcinoma in a goat infected naturally with Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis

Present study describes pathological findings of ileal adenocarcinoma in a goat infected naturally with Mycobacterium avium subsp. Paratuberculosis. The necropsy was carried out on a four year adult goat died of debility and anorexia. The carcass was weak and grossly, severe enlargement of mesenteric lymph nodes (MLN), edema and thickening of mucosa of ileum was noticed. Serosal surface of ileum was attached to a large nodular/tumerous mass with hard, gritty consistency. Impression smear from mucosa and MLN stained with ZN/acid fast staining and revealed numerous acid fast bacilli indistinguishable from Mycobacteriam avium var paratuberculosis. Microscopically, intestine revealed diffuse infiltration of epitheliod cells, macrophages, lymphocytes and giant cells in lamina propria and MLN suggestive of JD. In addition, the attached tumorous mass on the intestine showed proliferating epithelial cell in the form of acini with numerous mitotic figures, elongated spindle shaped fibroblast and osteocytes proliferation and disruption of basement membrane was observed in serosal and submucosal region of the ileum. The characteristic infiltration of epitheliod and giant cells with numerous acid fast bacilli confirmed it as Johne's disease but lesions of adenocarcinoma in ileum is one of the important finding in this case. The occurrence of paratuberculosis with adenocarcinoma is a rare finding in goats.
