Studies of genetic variability and trait association for grain yield and its components in two rowed and six rowed barley (Hordeum vulgare L.)

The present study was undertaken to determine genetic variability in relation to grain yield and its componentsin barley. Genetic analysis of grain yield and its components were conducted with 20 genotypes, grown in a randomized block design with three replications at CCS Haryana Agricultural University, Hisar during rabi 2010–11. Wide range, high coefficients of variation, heritability and genetic advance as percent of mean was recorded for grain yield, tillers/plant and number of grains/spike. Considerable amount of variation was found in material under study. Grain yield was found positively and significantly correlated with days to maturity and grains/spike. Path analysis revealed that days to maturity had highest positive direct effect followed by number of grains/spike. These desirable correlations showed that number of grains/spike and days to maturity were the major yield components.
