Investigation on the DCM extractives of Canadian Arctic fossil woods: the resolute sample

Chemical Wood analyses carried out on the fossil pine of Resolute (Cornwall is Island), the youngest among the Canadian Arctic fossil woods recently investigated, had shown that it was weakly affected in its main wood constituents with respect to a reference pine. GC/MS analysis of dichloromethane extract, on the contrary, has revealed important changes with reference to the minor wood constituents. Besides the compounds in common with other fossils such as linear hydrocarbons, fatty acids, long chain alcohols and diterpanes, the branched hydrocarbon pristane and some amides of fatty acids were detected. Assumptions on the mechanism of formation of these compounds as well as recent literature on their occurrence are discussed. The fatty acid amides were the first time found in a fossil wood while pristane, usually present in metamorphosed fossil fuels, is normally absent in rather little degraded fossils.
