Extract: In two experiments, groups of 10 male rats each were fed adequate and magnesium (Mg)-deficient diets to determine specific effects of the deficiency on the femur. Weanling rats were used in experiment 1; older animals in experiment 2 weighed 200 g initially. Femurs from Mg-deficient animals were shorter, contained less ash, were smaller in diameter near the proximal end of the bone, and contained a lower concentration of Mg in bone ash than those from controls. Age of animals determined the degree to which bone shape and mineral content were changed and the rate of Mg depletion, but most other evidences of Mg deficiency were independent of age.
