The influence of sheep grazing or cutting on dry matter (DM) yield and biological N2 fixation in a plant association composed of hubba clover (Melilotus albus) and perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) was evaluated. Four cutting or grazing cycles were carried out. During these four experimental cycles, DM was higher in the cutting treatment (11.4 t ha(-1) containing 35.06% hubba clover) than in the grazing treatment (9.6 t ha(-1), containing 37.30% hubba clover). N2 symbiotic fixation was similar in both cutting and grazing treatments. However, the population of N2 fixing bacteria of the rhizosphere of ryegrass was higher in the grazing treatment than in the cutting treatment.
