This investigation was conducted to determine the apparent effect of vegetables extracts on electric conductivity (CE) of saline soils and solutions with NaCl. The samples were taken from the upper part of two saline soils with CE of 19.8 or 12.1 dS m(-1), and two experiments were set up in 1.0 L polystyrene flowerpots, without drain holes. The extracts of bean, corn, and chickpea were obtained by means of pulverizing 1.0 kg fresh matter of the plants in 3.0 L distilled water, and filtering the solution with canvas. Extracts were applied three times to the soil, until it assumed a doughy appearance; each application was performed after the soil dried at room temperature. In laboratory, two experiments were conducted in glass flasks with 25, 50, 75 or 100 mL bean extract and 1.0 g NaCl; 75, 50, 25 or 0 mL distilled water was added to complete 100 mL in each flask. The results indicated that the bean and corn extracts apparently caused a greater reduction of CE in the soil solution. In the first experiment, CE diminished from 19.8 to 17.7 dS m(-1) (10.6%) with the bean extract; while in the second it decreased from 12.1 to 10.0 dS m(-1) (17.3%) with the corn extract; nevertheless, in both experiments CE decreased by 2.1 dS m(-1). Likewise, when bean extract was applied to a solution with NaCl, decrease in CE was 37% after 22 h and up to 48% after 144 h, with 75 and 100 mL extract, respectively.
