Student assessment is one of the most troublesome and time-consuming areas of education. The University of Alabama in Birmingham has developed a prototype of a National Nutrition Test-Item Bank (NNTIB) to aid educators in designing student assessment tools. Development of the NNTIB required creating a classification system and test-item format, establishing content and technical standards, designing a computer software system to manage usage data, field-testing the system's capability and subsequent modifications of the software, and finally, printing a complete examination with user instructions. Concurrently, the University surveyed nutrition educators and organized a workshop on NNTIB to obtain critical reviews of the Bank. The NNTIB concept was endorsed by a variety of nutrition educators including the ASCN Committee on Nutrition Education. Adoption of the NNTIB by a parent society with a long-term commitment to its support and development would overcome logistical, mechanical, and fiscal barriers to further NNTIB development. (emc)
