Preparation and mechanical characterization of engineered cementitious composites with high-volume fly ash and waste glass powder

Environmentalists, enterprises and governments are increasingly focusing on solid waste recycling which is regarded as an approach to potentially recover their status from waste to value-added materials. In this paper, engineered cementitious composites (ECCs) comprising 70–90% of fly ash (FA) and waste glass powder (GP) presented pronounced advantages over conventional concrete for construction applications. The influence of the replacement rate of FA and GP on the tensile and four-point bending performance of the ECCs was examined. The environmental implications of the prepared ECCs were investigated. The prepared ECCs showed a tensile strength of 4–7 MPa, stable tensile strain capacity of 3–5%, which were in line with the conditions for steady-state and multiple cracking conditions. The bending toughness reached a maximum value with 15% incorporation of GP and 60% FA content. Based on micromechanics analysis, tensile stress-strain and bending toughness models have been proposed separately to theoretically verify whether they satisfy the design theory of conventional ECC materials. In addition, ECCs prepared with high-volume solid wastes substituting cement were also in favor of the reduction of CO₂ emissions and energy consumption. Overall, this study reveals that recycling of solid wastes in ECCs not only provides a recycling method with low environmental impact, but is cleaner production for precluding exploitation of non-renewable natural resources.
