Proposed re-classification of furoviruses

The genus Furovirus currently comprises five species and five "unassigned" tentative species (Table 1). In recent years molecular information has become available for a number of these viruses. For example, the nucleotide sequences are known for most or all of the genomes of soil-borne wheat mosaic virus (SBWMV), beet necrotic yellow vein virus (BNYVV), potato mop-top (PMTV), peanut clump (PCV), Indian peanut clump (IPCV), beet soil-borne (BSBV) and broad bean necrosis viruses (BBNV). The data have shown that these viruses, previously thought to be similar on the basis largely of biological properties, are to varying extents unalike in genome organization and sequence relatedness. The consensus of opinion from recent publications on furoviruses is that their classification should be re-examined. A clear mandate to revise the classification was obtained after a consultation exercise involving participants at the Third Symposium of the international Working Group of Plant Viruses with Fungal Vectors, Dundee, August 1996, who included a number of the members of the Furovirus Study Group of the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses (ICTV). The purpose of this note is to publicise the consensus from these consultations. These will form the basis of taxonomic proposals to come from the Study Group in the near future. We therefore wish to provoke discussion and feedback which will inform the Study Group and assist them to make some proposals for change to the ICTV.
