A brief report explains the use of a microcomputer software knowledge base management (SKBM) system in relation to the prediction of drug-induced lactose intolerance (DILI) and the prevention of drug-alcohol and drug-food induced flush reactions. For 1 of the examples given, DILI is induced by certain drugs that cause gastrointestinal malabsorption for different reasons (e.g., interaction, cytotoxicity), known as attributes, having attribute values for DILI, interaction, cytotoxicity, etc. of "yes" or "no." A computer print-out spread sheet, therefore, can be developed to show the relationship of the various elements (disease, drug), attributes, and attribute values, with the probability of each attribute classified by the PIC index. Hence, knowing the attributes of the drugs, the availability of microcomputer SKBM systems can facilitate prediction of the mechanism and the effects of drug-nutrient interactions.(wz)
