The biology and behaviour of the pasture beetle scitala sericans erichson (scarabaeidae: melolonthinae)
1977
HARDY, R. J.
Scitala sericans has a life cycle of one year duration and inhabits pastures in southâeastern Australia, including Tasmania. It is the most common meloonthine in Tasmanian pastures. The larvae feed near the surface of the soil on organic matter, including plant roots, and heavy populations have seriously damaged small areas of pasture in Tasmania in some years. They are attacked by a number of parasites, diseases and both vertebrate and invertebrate predators. S. sericans inhabits a wide variety of habitats and in Tasmania it often coâexists with a number of other scarabs. The larvae can be separated from those of other Tasmanian scarabs on features of the raster.
