Physically induced mutation by acute and fractionated irradiation on Coleus spp

This research used gamma irradiation to increase the genetic variability. The objectives of this research were to identify quantitative performance and to obtain different qualitative change due to the effects of acute and fractionated irradiation on Coleus spp. shoot cuttings in MV1 generation. The results showed that the highest irradiation dose on Coleus spp. produced the lowest average on plant height, number of leaves, number of nodes, number of branches, leaf width and leaf length. Gamma ray irradiation treatment produced 8 putative mutants of Coleus blumei (purple/green) based on colour differences. Most of them were formed at the 40, 45 and 50 gy doses of fractionated irradiation (5 putative mutants) and then at the 40 and 45 gy doses of acute irradiation (3 putative mutants). These eight putative mutants were potentially stable and solid to be developed in the next generation.
