A successful behavioral weight-loss program for moderately-retarded teenagers

A behavioral weight-loss program for moderately-retarded teenagers is assessed. The 14-week treatment involved exposing 12 subjects to the following techniques: self-monitoring, using self-restraint regarding food, changing eating habits, engaging in alternatives to eating, and exercising. Instruction on the techniques was provided three times a week. Group one (6 subjects) received live instruction. Group two (6 subjects) received video-tapes of the live sessions. Group three was a control group, and the six subjects were encouraged to lose weight on their own. Subjects in group one and two had a mean weight loss of 11.00 and 9.45 lb. respectively. The control group had a mean weight gain of 4.00 lb. No significant differences occurred between the live and video-tape techniques. Weight loss for the behavior-therapy subjects continued during five week maintenance and 16-week followup periods.
