A letter to the editor reports methods and conclusions from a study of the effect of sera from marathon runners on two important functions of arterial smooth-muscle cells--namely, proliferation and synthesis of glycosaminoglycans. The results support at cellular level suggestions based on epidemiological data that running protects against coronary heart disease. The sera from runners inhibits those reactions of arterial cells which are considered important in the genesis of atherosclerosis. The exact cause of the beneficial effect is under investigation.
