Studies of Selection Parameter in Sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.)

Selection which is the basis of every breeding programme operates only on variation which is of genetic nature (Johansen, 1909). The better chances of selecting desired types are based on the fact that how much variability present in any crop concerned. The analysis of variance revealed significant differences among the genotypes viz., parents and their F₁s for almost all the traits viz,. days to maturity, plant height (cm), number of leaves per plant, head diameter (cm), number of seeds per plant, 100-seed weight (g), filled seed percentage, seed yield (g/plant), biological yield (g/plant), harvest index (%) and oil content which justifying the presence of adequate variability with regard to the important traits under study. The heritability estimates were high for days to maturity, plant height (cm), number of leaves per plant, head diameter (cm), number of seeds per plant, 100-seed weight (g), filled seed percentage, seed yield (g/plant), biological yield (g/plant), harvest index (%) and oil. It indicates the presence of greater contribution of additive genetic component in the inheritance of these attributes. Expected genetic advance was observed to be high for seed yield per plant, biological yield per plant, number of seed per plant, harvest index, head diameter, 100 seed weight, number of leaves per plant and plant height The traits with high heritability and high genetic advance may be subjected to mass or progeny or family selection or any selection scheme, aimed at exploiting additive (fixable) genetic variance, so that a widely adapted genotype possessing high productivity may be developed.
