Black single crystals of Ti₀.₃₃Ta₀.₆₇O₂ have been prepared by CO₂-LASER techniques heating a mixture of TiO and Ta₂O₅ to T > 2000 °C. The titanium tantalum oxide crystallizes with tetragonal symmetry, space group D¹⁴₄ₕ -P4₂/mnm, lattice constants a = 4.7344(6) Å c = 3.0504(2) Å, Z = 2. Ti₀.₃₃Ta₀.₆₇O₂ represents the compound TiTa₂O₆ with rutile structure because of the statistical distribution of Ti²⁺ and Ta⁵⁺. The composition of rutile-type compounds is discussed in more general terms.
