Ochratoxin A and citrinin induced biochemical changes in New Zealand White rabbits

The present investigation deals with the effects of ochratoxin A (OTA), citrinin (CIT) and their combination on the biochemical parameters in 6–8 weeks old New Zealand White rabbits at 0, 15, 30, 45 and 60 days post intoxication. The rabbits were divided into four groups of 16 animals each. OTA (0.75 ppm, group I), CIT(15 ppm, group II) and combination (0.75 OTA plus 15ppm CIT, group III) were given in feed up to 60 days of the trial and the control (group IV) was fed standard toxin free feed. Biochemically, hypoproteinemia, hypoalbuminemia and hypoglobulinemia were observed in all the animals in the treated groups. Blood glucose levels decreased markedly in OTA and combination groups but not in the CIT treated group. The levels of serum creatinine, ALP, ALT, AST and LDH were increased significantly in all the toxin treated groups. However, biochemical alterations were maximum in the combination group and least in the citrinin treated group. The interaction of both the toxins was found to be additive.
