Cholesterol and triglyceride fluctuations in mice tissues during methylmercury intoxication and monothiols and vitamin therapy

The aim of this investigation is to check the efficacy of monothiols and vitamins in the restoration of cholesterol and triglycerides in mice pre-toxicated with methylmercury chloride (MMC). For this purpose, 10 groups of animals were intoxicated with a daily dose (1 mg kg-1) of MMC for 7 days. Of these, one group was kept without toxicant for another 7 days before death on day 15. The rest of the groups were given a daily dose of glutathione, N-acetyl-DL-homocysteine thiolactone, vitamin B complex and vitamin E either alone or in various combinations. These animals were killed on day 15. The study showed a significant recovery of both the biomolecules in one or another therapeutic group except triglycerides in the brain and liver during vitamin application. However, monothiols were less effective with a few exceptions. As the therapeutic agents used in this study are natural physiological components present in all of the animals, they are unlikely to be injurious if applied in appropriate doses. Hence, they can safely be recommended for methylmercury detoxication.
