Impact of ascophylum nodosum (Brown Sea Weed) extracts application in sugarcane cultivation

Sugarcane, an important cash crop and a good source for substance of largest agro-industry, is beingcultivated in most part of tropical and sub-tropical India. In West Uttar Pradesh it occupies more than 65% of cultivable land. The practices of sugarcane cultivation without following scientific crop rotationpackages and imbalance fertilization resulted into the depletion of nutrients from soil, forced thegrower's to use more and more chemical fertilizers and micronutrients, resulting a rise in cost ofproduction. Ascophylum nodosum, a common cold water sea weed or brown algae, extracts are beingused as a organic and main stream fertilizer for many crop due to its combination of both micronutrients(Ca, Mg, S, Mn, Cu, Fe and Zn etc) and macronutrients (N,P and K) is also reported to containscytokines, auxin- like gibberellins, organic acid etc, which are very beneficial. So, in order to establish itscompatibility with sugarcane cultivation an experiment was conducted at Sugarcane Research CenterMuzaffarnagar during 2015–16 and 2016–17 in RBD using for doses i.e. 15.0 kg ha -1, 20.0 kg ha -1 25.Kgha -1 and 30.kg ha -1 applied after 45 DAP with first irrigation. The variety used in the study was CoSe08279. The study reveals that an use of 25 kg/ha -1 of this sea weed extract at the time of irrigation leadto an improvement in shoot population (201/ha), number of millable canes (190/ha), and yield (93.64) italso observed in sucrose % juice at non-significant level. So, on the basis of study it can be depicted that 25.0 kg ha -1 of Ascophylum nodosum extract is beneficial for sugarcane cultivation.
