Haematological changes induced by ochratoxin A and citrinin alone and in combination in young growing rabbits

In the present study, the effects of ochratoxin A (OTA), citrinin (CIT) and their combination on the clinical and haematological parameters in 6–8 weeks old New Zealand White rabbits were studied at 0, 15, 30, 45 and 60 days post intoxication. The rabbits were divided into four groups of 16 animals each. OTA, CIT and combination were given @ 0.75 ppm (group I),15 ppm (group II) and 0.75 plus 15ppm (group III), respectively in feed up to 60 days of the trial and the group IV, kept as a control, was fed standard toxin free feed. The intoxicated animals showed reduced feed intake, polydipsia and decreased growth. Two animals each died from the OTA and combination treated groups and one animal died from the CIT group whereas control animals remained healthy. Significant growth depression was observed in the toxin treated animals from 35 days post intoxication onwards, with maximum effect observed in the combination group. The treated rabbits were anaemic as evidenced by reduced haemoglobin, packed cell volume (PCV) and total erythrocyte count (TEC) values. Leucopaenia was also observed due to lymphocytopenia. It may be concluded that OTA and CIT either alone or in combination caused anorexia, polydipsia, growth depression, anaemia and leucocytopenia. The interaction of both the toxins was found to be additive.
