The practicing physician's attitudes toward nutrition and cancer

Three problems affecting the relationship of cancer and nutrition concern the practicing physician: 1) dietary practices and cancer incidence; 2) cancer's effects on the patient's nutritional status; 3) nutritional management during cancer therapy. Since a prudent diet has not been clearly defined, the physician's role in cancer prevention through diet modification is limited. Due to a lack of nutrition counseling by the physician, the newly-diagnosed cancer patient may introduce major, self-imposed changes in his diet. When malnutrition develops in cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, inadequately trained or ill-prepared physicians are unable to provide advice and dietary management, despite the availability of safe procedures for nutritional support. Thus, there is a great need to educate doctors on nutritional assessment and care, to urge their involvement in nutritional intervention, and to encourage their cooperation with nutritionists.
