Preparation of chitosan/laterite/iron oxide-based biocomposite and its application as a potential adsorbent for the removal of methylene blue from aqueous solution

Remediation of dye contamination is an important concern for countries such as Bangladesh whose economy depend heavily on textile and dyeing industries. A novel biocomposite was prepared using chitosan, laterite, and iron-oxide particles via crosslinking with a non-toxic ionic crosslinker (sodium tripolyphosphate). The resulting biocomposite is biodegradable and uses locally available materials (prawn shells, and laterite). An extensive characterization of the composite is the focus of this study. To test its adsorption capacity, the removal of methylene blue from aqueous solutions was tested. Changes in adsorptive capacity due to changes in dosage amount, initial concentration, and pH were investigated. With the increase in pH, rapid adsorption has been observed, and the maximum adsorbent capacity was found to be 16 mg/g using Langmuir Isotherm. The adsorption was found to follow pseudo-second-order-reaction kinetics. As a biodegradable and renewable composite with facile separation property, this composite may be applied as a prospective adsorbent.
