The 10 Basic Sports Nutrition Rules are applicable to the average sports enthusiast as well as the professional athlete. Rules include; 1) develop a daily food plan and stick to it; 2) when travelling, stick to foods you know and ask that they be prepared simply; 3) rest and relaxation are crucial to overall good health; 4) drink plenty of fluids during activity even if you're not thirsty; 5) avoid salt tablets and eat a well-balanced diet to replace lost electrolytes; 6) eat a low-in-fat pregame meal at least three hours before competition; 7) avoid too many sweets; 8) decrease food intake when activity level goes down; 9) assist the athlete in choosing food best for him or her; and 10) stay away from high-priced drinks, powders and pills formulated for the athlete. Interviews with three professional athletes confirm the use and benefits of following the Sports Nutrition Rules.
