The effects of dietary sucrose and streptozotocin-diabetes on blood and liver constituents

Normal and streptozotocin-diabetic rats were maintained on starch- or sucrose-rich diets for up to 11 months. The levels of ATP, ADP, AMP, inorganic phosphate and 2,3-DPG in the blood and liver were monitored. In normal rats the sucrose diet did not significantly alter the adenine nucleotide or phosphate content of the liver and blood. The diabetic state caused a reduction of ATP and an increase of AMP and liver phosphate content. Feeding sucrose to diabetic animals increased blood phosphate levels. The erythrocyte 2,3-DPG content was not affected by the alterations of ATP and phosphate levels or by the diabetes.
